Situated in one of the sunniest parts of the Adriatic and hidden between large mountain ranges, this little known holiday gem for years has been the secret haunt of celebrities
Now, having gained independence from Serbia in 2006 and with the advent of cheaper flights from Dubrovnik's airport (just over the border), Montenegro is becoming a top holiday destination for those looking for something different and are discovering, what the rich and the famous have known for years, the hidden depths of this most beautiful country.
Likened to New Zealand, one third of Montenegro is covered by mountains - the most rugged in Europe - whilst its coastline has some of the nicest beaches and coves on the Adriatic and its spectacular fjord like Kotor Bay (Boka Kotorska) is breathtakingly beautiful with its steep sided slopes dotted with pretty little fishing villages.
At the head of the bay is Kotor - one of Europe's most beautiful medieval walled towns. With its Venetian influence, its maze of narrow cobbled streets and tiny alleyways free of traffic, its pavement cafes, boutiques, restaurants and disco night clubs Kotor is a favourite stopping off point for cruise ships and luxury boats lured up the fjord by the stunning scenery, welcoming atmosphere and superb food.
5% off if booked before Easter
Hotels abound on the coast of Montenegro but as you travel up the fjord to Kotor Bay they give way more and more to privately owned villas and apartments, each unique in style and furnishing.
Self catering in Montenegro is no problem. There are daily fresh meat and vegetable markets, local 'corner 'shops, small supermarkets and now hypermarkets selling a whole range of commodities. Plus more and more of the locals are starting to speak English.
Starbucks there isn't it, but there are plenty of places to eat out - many on the water front - and lots of choice. Sea food is a must as are the mussels freshly cultivated around Orahovac.
